Yes, there are a lot of unique concepts to be had in the Ninth World and in fact I do like a lot of the creatures, visitants, old machines, and hypertech artifacts quite a bit. It could still happen.Įh, the feudal trappings of the Steadfast don't sit well with me. I wish, though, that like Bioshock Infinite, they'd push that concept a little harder. I do like all the little ways in which everything's kind of a funhouse mirror to Sigil.

That's something of a problem I have with Numenera overall, though, where though the ideas themselves are quite original, the presentation tends to fall closer to its generic fantasy roots. Some of the dialogue does seem a little tighter on this pass, but it is kind of bland overall. Twists and surprises are good, and foreshadowing can work well, but this seems like tipping the bean can a little too much. Also everyone is brimming with secrets which they broadcast with everything they say but won't actually talk about. So far this is more like Baldur's Gate or Fallout 3, where there's potential quirkiness to be had but overall everything's a lot more grounded. Lots of companions available right from the start, but still kind of waiting for one of them to *pop* the way Morte did. Maybe they're holding some things back during the beta? Hope so. The Mortuary was fascinating in its own right, full of nooks and crannies and eccentric personalities right from the start. So my trouble with the falling scene and the starting Fathom is still that things start out with a little too much character-building and exposition, and not enough nonlinear exploration.
